FAQs about water softening and our water systems

1What is hard water? What is soft water?
All freshwater could be classified into two categories, soft water or hard water. The defining factor is water that contains calcium and magnesium is classified as hard water, and water that doesn't is labeled as soft water. There are a few other contaminants that can make water "hard" but they are quite rare.
Why does it matter?
Think about all the ways you use water throughout your day. Whether you notice it or not, hard water has negative effects on almost everything it touches.
Hard water leaves a film on top of glass, metal, and porcelain surfaces. The whitish stain you continually have to clean off your shower door is a product of hard water. It also affects your water using appliances, coffee makers, ice machines, clothes washing and dishwashing machines. The inner-workings that involve moving water often get clogged and are more liable to break down when using hard water.
Water heaters, tank and tankless, are also affected by hard water. The heating coils become coated in calcium and magnesium and the efficiency reduces dramatically in just a couple of years.
There are a lot of benefits to soft water and negative effects of hard water.
2Why Does Soft Water Feel Like It's Not Rinsing The Soap Off Completely?
Your skin feels slippery after you shower not because you have soap or a film on your skin, but because you’ve achieved a more thorough clean. Soap lathers more easily in soft water and less soap is required to clean than when using hard water. It may feel like it takes forever to rinse the soap off in soft water when in reality your probably using more soap than necessary.
3Should I have a licensed contractor install a softener?

YES!!!
Installing equipment to treat water requires a special license and special knowledge about plumbing code. Handyman companies DO NOT hold this license and are not legally allowed to install them. This becomes a huge liability and leaves the homeowner responsible for any flooding or issues caused by improper installation. Most installers reduce the plumbing main size to “hook up” softening equipment which drastically restricts water flow. Also, plumbing service companies that can install softeners lack the training and experience to program a water softener properly, resulting in a very inefficient system. This will cost more money in the long run compared to using a contractor that specializes solely in water treatment.
